SpongeBob Squarepants The Musical

Spongebob Squarepants 2023

In 2023 Claremont High school put on “The SpongeBob Squarepants Musical” written by Kyle Jarrow in 2015.

When Mount Humongous, a nearby volcano, threatens to destroy Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends must band together to save their undersea home. Despite being underestimated, SpongeBob proves that even the smallest sponge can make a big difference.

As panic spreads, Patrick becomes an accidental cult leader, Squidward dreams of stardom, Sandy Cheeks uses science to find a solution, and Plankton schemes to control the town. With time running out, SpongeBob’s optimism and teamwork inspire everyone to face the crisis with courage and unity.

Act I:

Bikini Bottom Day – (Jonathan Coulton)

SpongeBob wakes up and celebrates another bright day in Bikini Bottom. It’s an upbeat opening that introduces the town and SpongeBob’s boundless optimism.

No Control – (David Bowie & Brian Eno)

When the volcano threatens to erupt, the townspeople descend into chaos. The song’s edgy tone mirrors the panic and uncertainty that takes over.

BFF – (Plain White T’s)

SpongeBob and Patrick reaffirm their friendship in a heartfelt, silly duet. It’s charming and catchy, emphasizing the power of loyalty even in crisis.

When the Going Gets Tough – (T.I.)

Plankton and Karen plot to manipulate the townspeople for their own gain. It’s a confident, rap-infused villain song full of swagger and dark humor.

(Just a) Simple Sponge – (Panic! At The Disco)

SpongeBob doubts himself but realizes he has what it takes to be a hero. The song builds dramatically, showing his inner struggle and eventual confidence.

Daddy Knows Best – (Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros)

Pearl resists her father Mr. Krabs’ attempts to control her dreams. It’s a rebellious, soulful anthem about independence and finding your own voice.

Hero Is My Middle Name – (Cyndi Lauper & Rob Hyman)

SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy team up to save Bikini Bottom. The tune is bold and playful, celebrating bravery, teamwork, and determination.

Super Sea Star Saviour – (Yolanda Adams)

Patrick is mistaken for a divine prophet by a group of sardines. The gospel-inspired song humorously explores fame, faith, and ego.

Tomorrow Is – (The Flaming Lips)

The citizens of Bikini Bottom face what might be their last night before the volcano erupts. It’s an introspective, psychedelic piece that captures fear and hope.

Act II:

Poor Pirates – (Sara Bareilles)

A crew of misfit pirates sing about the freedom of living by their own rules. The song adds levity and spirit just before the story’s final act.

Bikini Bottom Boogie – (Steven Tyler & Joe Perry of Aerosmith)

The town bursts into a high-energy rock jam. It’s wild, chaotic, and full of electric guitar flair—perfect for an undersea party.

Chop to the Top – (Lady A)

SpongeBob and Sandy climb Mount Humongous, overcoming obstacles along the way. The country-pop rhythm captures both their courage and exhaustion.

(I Guess I) Miss You – (John Legend)

SpongeBob and Patrick reconcile after their brief fallout. The smooth R&B melody makes it one of the show’s most emotional moments.

I’m Not a Loser – (They Might Be Giants)

Squidward finally gets his big show-stopping number. It’s campy, funny, and heartfelt as he insists he isn’t a loser — complete with tap dancers.

Best Day Ever – (Tom Kenny & Andy Paley)

Pulled from the original TV series, SpongeBob stays positive despite impending doom. It’s nostalgic and joyful, representing the heart of the show’s optimism.

Finale: Bikini Bottom Day (Reprise) – (Jonathan Coulton)

With the volcano stopped, Bikini Bottom rejoices. The reprise unites the whole cast in celebration of community and hope.
